Packing list for climbing Mt Meru

Climbing Mt. Meru is like going on a hike in the Swedish Fjall in the autumn. You need the same things. This is a light packing list that we think would be ideal if we were to go again, on a 3-day trip where the food is being sorter for you by the chef and porters, but where you carry your other belongings.

Clothes
  • A pair of trekking trousers (wear the whole time)
  • A pair of good hiking shoes (wear the whole time)
  • A good pair of socks (wear the whole time)
  • A shirt (wear the whole time)
  • Thermal  underwear (trousers and shirt, mainly for the summit attempt)
  • A fleece (for evenings, breaks and the summit attempt)
  • A second thinner fleece-ish shirt (optional but can be nice for evenings, breaks and summit attempts)
  • Wind- and waterproof jacket and trousers (for rain and for the summit attempt)
  • Underwear
  • Sleeping bag (must be for like -5C)
  • Hat and gloves (you need these for the summit. Be prepared for about 0C at the top, and sometimes it is also windy which makes you cold quicker)
Things
  • Headtorch (for evenings and for the summit attempt, which is at night)
  • Toilet roll (the huts have this but it sometimes runs out, and sometimes you gotta go when youre walking...)
  • Soap (for washing at the huts)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Money (for tipping, buying something at the gate perhaps)
  • Water (about two 1.5 litre bottles. you get them topped up by the guides as you climb)
  • Phone or camera for pictures (there is some network along the way. No electricity for charging though, only at the gate before departure, so not much use for charger)
  • Sunscreen (very important!!!)

Very optional things
  • Sweets or nuts (not necessary but maybe nice)
  • Walking stick (we found these pretty useless but guess some people like them)
  • Daypack (we found we could just have packed light and carried our own things all the way up without help from the porters. So you dont really need two bags. But of course, having a smaller or lighter bag was nice while attempting the summit. but if your normal pack is light you could use that)
